Herculaneum Tour - Pompeii and Wine Tasting
The eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD it also struck the city of Herculaneum with a flow of earth and lava. But unlike Pompeii, the city of Herculaneum kept wooden buildings and all kinds of goods. So for archaeological studies it is a very important place. Sculptures, paintings, vases and so on are now in the "Archaeological Museum of Naples" and in the "Antiquarium".
You will begin this experience in the city of Pompeii. After tasting one of the most famous and important Neapolitan wines, the so-called "Lacryma Christi". You can also sample local food such as "setaro" spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce and a starter with salami and local cheese.
The old city of Pompeii is located at the base of Vesuvius and was flourishing during the period of the Roman Empire. After the eruptions of the volcano in 79 BC the city was destroyed and covered with ash and lapilli. The archaeological excavation began in the 700s and in three centuries only 3/5 parts of the city were discovered. Now the city has declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and, every year, around 3,000,000 tourists are visited.
